DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEATHER

Different types of leather
Every leather starts its life course the same: as a bare skin. After the leather is tanned in the tannery, it is inspected before being processed into upholstery. In one lifetime, a cow gets a lot to endure: fly bites, scratches, scraps, branding. Yet you do not always see this on your couch, how is that possible? After a skin is tanned, it is processed into a final product. This happends in stages and in various ways. The way the leather is finished determines the looks, the feels and also the type of maintenance. The most common types of leather are listed here:∙ pigmented leather
∙ aniline leather
∙ saddle leather
∙ vintage leather
∙ nubuck leather

----------
Frequency of maintenance

Pigmented leather - Keralux® set P

This is the most common leather on the market. After the leather is tanned, it is finished with several layers of color pigments. The advantage of this is that small imperfections, scars and spots can be camouflaged. In addition, this top layer of color pigments protects the leather against sunlight, dirt and moisture. In practice, this is the easiest leather to maintain and most suitable for families with small children.

Maintenance:

∙ weekly dusting and / or wiping with a slightly damp cloth
∙ maintain 2x a year with the products from the Keralux® set P
∙ possibly additional protection with the Keralux® strong protector

----------
Aniline leather - Keralux® set A

After tanning, the aniline leather is dyed throughout in a container and, in contrast to pigmented leather, is not finished with a top layer of color pigments. We also call this a leather an open structured leather. Hides that qualify to be processed into aniline leather are rare because they should not show any scars or other forms of damage. The great advantage of aniline leather is that it looks beautiful, it also feels warm, soft and luxurious. Because the leather is not protected (open structured) it comes with a manual. The most important thing is to protect this leather from day 1 against discoloration and stains. In practice, this is not the most suitable leather for families with small children and / or pets.

Maintenance:

∙ weekly dusting and / or wiping a slightly damp cloth
∙ maintain 2x a year with the products from the Keralux® set A
∙ protect new furniture from day 1 with the Keralux® lotion A

----------
Saddle leather - Keralux® set S

'Saddle' leather is actually a collective name for all leather that is finished with a wax layer. This wax layer is also the only protection for this type of leather. You can easily recognize a saddle leather by gently covering the surface with your nails. You will see that your nails leave small scratches. Do not freak out! Because, if well maintained, these scratches are embedded in the wax layer that protects the leather. The maintenance of this type of leather speaks for itself: replenish the wax layer in time. Typical of this type of leather are discoloration due to dehydration or the lack of maintenance.

Maintenance:

∙ weekly dusting and / or wiping with a slightly damp cloth
∙ maintain 2x a year with the products from the Keralux® set S
∙ protect new furniture from day 1 with the Keralux® lotion S

----------
Vintage leather - Keralux® set Vi

One of the most popular and emerging leather types of the past 5 years is called 'vintage' leather. This leather can best be described as an opposite aniline leather. The imperfections, slight discoloration, possible scars and scratches give this leather its charm. The leather is often partly sanded and provided with a top finish layer. This leather also has an open structure and is therefore sensitive to discoloration due to sunlight.

Maintenance:

∙ weekly dusting and / or wiping with a slightly damp cloth
∙ maintain 2x a year with the products from the Keralux® set Vi
∙ protect new furniture from day 1 with the Keralux® spray N

----------
Nubuck leather - Keralux® set N

Characteristic of a nubuck leather is that it feels soft and warm to the touch. The leather is lightly sanded so that it almost has a velvety appearance. Nubuck leather has a very nice grip and looks stunning but needs to be maintained. Because the leather is partly sanded off, almost a kind of 'fibers' are created that can mix with whirling dust and perspiration. Typical are the black spots that can arise as a result. In addition, nubuck leather is very sensitive to discoloration by sunlight.

Maintenance:

∙ weekly dusting and / or wiping with a slightly damp cloth
∙ 2x a year with the products from the Keralux® set N
∙ protect new furniture from day 1 with the Keralux® spray N
∙ remove soiling with the Keralux® cleaning cloth for nubuck

Are you taking over an old piece of furniture from someone? Or have you moved to a new home and do you want to carry out overdue maintenance? Then this page is for you!Photos
LCK® Nederland processes countless photos of old and / or moderately maintained leather furniture items every day. We have a number of specific products to revive these old gems. Are you curious about what we advise you? Send a mail to: info@lcknederland.nl for personal advice.Save the receipt!
We have already tested most (new & old) leather types from Piet Boon in our laboratory. This means that in addition to cleaners and lotions, we also have the original color codes. If you still have the original purchase receipt, it contains all the information you need for selecting your color. So save the receipt and store it carefully, who knows it will come in handy someday!Database
As soon as you know which leather and which color it is, you can order a Keralux® color repair set. You can do this easily by clicking on this link: Restoring color. Then make a selection from the menu on the right. Choose the type of leather and the color (code) and press order. Did you know that LCK® now has a physical database of more than 30,000 leather and fabric samples?Old couch
Here a standard situation of an old couch. In the first image we see that the leather is discolored. The cause of this is almost always a form of overdue maintenance. The color pigments pull from the surface to the core of the leather due to the influences of sunlight, drought and lack of nutrients. The result of this is that the leather will show small cracks (also called: crackle or craquelé) and discolour.Primarily two things must happen here:

∙ intensive nutrition
∙ restore color

By first feeding the leather intensively, the old color pigments will pull back from the core and head to the surface. This means that the color will intensify automatically and that new color pigments will be absorbed more evenly. The leather as shown in the second image was treated with the Keralux® leather balm a week before the color lotion. The balm has been specially developed for this type of situation and provides the leather with a concentrated amount of nutrients. By giving the leather a week to absorb the nutrients, new color pigments will be absorbed more easily, making the end result a lot more beautiful.

The what a beautiful end result! In total the leather was treated 2x with the leather balm followed by three layers of color lotion.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FABRIC

The ease of use of a fabric is highly dependent on the fibers used. Wool is a natural product that is usually easy to clean due to its composition. Cotton has a large absorbing capacity. This is experienced as positive by the makers of brightly colored cotton fabrics because the dyes are so well absorbed. However, spilled liquids such as coffee, beer and wine also draw directly into the fiber. This also applies to linen. Silk cannot withstand water well. Because our products are water-based, we can only recommend dry treatment with the dry cleaning glove for silk.Chenille fabrics often suffer from a sitting mirror or shading and may often not be cleaned wet. In short, dust seems simple, but here too it is better to first look carefully than treated incorrectly. Take a look on our advice page to see which products are best suited for your application.

----------
Natural fibers

∙ cotton: open structure, making it sensitive to liquids, risk of creasing and shrinking
∙ linen: open structure, making it sensitive to liquids, risk of creasing and shrinking
∙ wool: elastic, more resistant to dirt, durable, almost wrinkle-free
∙ silk: very sensitive, cannot withstand UV, must not get wet

----------
Synthetic fibers

∙ acrylic: fairly durable, good UV value, almost always in combination with other fibers
∙ nylon: (polyamide), durable
∙ polyamide: (nylon), durable
∙ polyester: strong material, most used synthetic fiber, durable, good UV value
∙ polyurethane: is often used as a top layer in artificial leather or as a fiber in e.g. microfiber
∙ trevira CS: fire retardant polyester
∙ viscose: combination of natural fibers and wood, sensitive to creases and stains

PROTECTING FABRIC UPHOLSTERY

Impregnation
With the Puratex® complete care set is the most common set with which you can protect and care for your fabric seating furniture. The Puratex® impregnator contains no propellant gas or solvent. You can start using the treated furniture again after a few hours of drying time. Moisture and dirt can penetrate the fiber less quickly, cleaning becomes easier. Impregnate new furniture from day 1, then freshen up every six months. How does it work?
Use your vacuum cleaner with the (soft) furniture attachment to clean the upholstery of your furniture on a weekly basis (up to 500 watts) and thus remove household dust, crumbs and other daily dirt. By moisturizing the LCK® cleaning glove with Puratex® cleaning water and wiping the surface from seam to seam, the fabric refreshes. Spray the spray evenly over a distance of 20-30 centimeters over the fabric and then let the coating dry thoroughly. The impregnator has its optimum effect after 24 hours.Important: LCK Nederland has tested every Piet Boon fabric for cleanability. Take a look at the maintenance advice to see if your fabric can be impregnated and / or be wet cleaned.

GENERAL TIPS

PETS
Claws from pets can harm any upholstery cover. Scratches on leather or textile covers do
not look very nice. But even high-quality covers will not withstand this “treatment”.

HUMIDITY
Too much moistness will harm the upholstery furniture. The construction is often made of wooden materials. Also other inner materials, like foam material, suffer from humidity and can get unstable. Furthermore, marks caused by mildew can occur. Recommended room climate: approx. 45-55% atmospheric humidity, room temperature 18 °C - 21 °C.
HEATING
Too much heat will damage the upholstery covers. Also foam material will suffer from excessive heat.
Therefore, do not place your upholstery sofa too close to any source of heat! Keep sufficient distance from heating and fire places. If an upholstery sofa is placed in front of the heating, please ensure that there is enough distance between floor and sofa so that the heat can circulate.

SUN AND LIGHT
Light changes materials! In general, sunlight as wel as artificial light fades textiles and leather over time.
If possible, avoid exposing your upholstery to sunlight and to very close and strong halogen light as it can
speed up fading process.

MAINTAINING LEATHER

They sometimes say that leather is 'alive'. You can best compare leather with your own skin, which needs a little attention every so often. You probably shower sometimes and use shampoo, skin cream, scrubs, masks and other maintenance products to keep your skin in top condition. Furniture leather needs to be maintained the same way.

1. Keep the leather free of dust
Micro-contamination, or around swirling dust particles, can easily mix with household waste, skin fats, perspiration and other liquids. Wipe your piece of furniture every week with a clean dry cloth or (if possible) with the soft furniture attachment of your vacuum cleaner.2. Half-yearly maintenance
Furniture leather is made for use, but this does not mean that it is indestructible. Use the products from your regular maintenance set twice a year on average to keep the leather in top condition. Read more about the frequency of maintenance on this page: different leathers.3. Distilled water
Do not use tap water. Not all tap water in the Netherlands has the same water hardness. This means that, after using tap water, annoying lime edges (or 'water edges') may remain. Bring 1 liter of distilled water into your home. This always comes in handy and is available in almost every supermarket or at the drugstore.4. Stains
Never use home, garden or kitchen products to remove stains. First consult the stain page and then take a clear picture of the stain or damage. Send this photo to LCK® Netherlands for professional advice. In all cases, try to resist the temptation to scrub spots, you will always see this.Send an e-mail directly to LCK® the Netherlands: info@lcknederland.nl

MAINTAINING FABRIC

Basic maintenance for fabrics
Use the vacuum cleaner with the furniture attachment to clean fabric furniture on a weekly basis (up to 500 watts) and thus remove household dust, crumbs and other daily soiling. The fabric refreshes completely by slightly rubbing the fabric with the LCK® cleaning glove, using a few drops of Puratex® cleaning water. The substance receives a little moisture and superficial dirt is removed. The fabric shines again and stays beautiful much longer.Weekly cleaning

Keep the surface dust-free.Remove with the LCK® cleaning glove (dry or with a few drops of cleaning water).Semi-annual maintenanceMake surface dust free.

Wipe with the LCK® cleaning glove (slightly damp).Impregnate with the Puratex® impregnation spray. With stains

Remove coarse contamination about possibly with a spoon or the blunt side of a knife. Then treat the stain with the Puratex® strong cleaner. Put some of the cleaner on a clean cloth and treat the stain. Always work from the outside in and always treat a larger area than the stain itself. After cleaning with Puratex® cleaning water. Put a little cleaning water in a container and immerse the LCK® cleaning glove / clean cloth and wring them out. Then thoroughly clean the cleaned fabric from seam to seam. Repeat once if necessary.Impregnate the fabric with the Puratex® impregnator. Hold the pump injector at a distance of 20-30 centimeters above the fabric and spray a thin, even layer over the fabric. Try to keep the pump injector as vertical as possible. Let the fabric dry well.Take a look at the stain page for more information and useful tips!

HELP WITH STAINS

A pen line in leather, chocolate milk or soup tampered? Do not panic! A lot of stains are easily removed with the right care product and a little bit of patience. Read more about useful tips and tricks on this page, how to deal with fresh stains and much more!

----------
10 basic rules

There are many types of stains, and they all differ from each other. There are large spots, small spots, grease stains, stains with colour, stains caused by medicine, limescale, small scratches and bald spots. Each stain has a different cause and must be treated in a separate way. That sounds difficult, but fortunately there are 10 basic rules that apply to all of them:

Keep the leather dust-free. Weekly dusting is 90% of your regular maintenance. Dust, or micro-pollution, can mix with skin fat and or perspiration. This combination can cause ugly black stains.Nourish the leather every six months with the products from the regular maintenance set. Nutrition is incredibly important and therefor the half-yearly maintenance cannot be skipped. Dehydrated leather will absorb liquids much faster, making stains with liquids more difficult to remove. In case of stains with liquid, try to remove the liquid as soon as possible. Try to dab as little as possible on the stain. Take for example (uncolored) kitchen paper and use this to suck up the liquid. This is easiest done when you keep the tip of the paper in the liquid.Remove stains with solids as much as possible with a (clean) spoon.Try to resist the temptation to scrub, rub or put any pressure on the leather. If youd do you'll have a chance that you will continue to see the stain permanently.Do not use home, garden or kitchen remedies. Often solvents like alcohol are included in these products.Always clean a complete section (such as an entire seat cushen / back surface) and not just the stain.Always treat a stain from the outside in, while putting as little pressure as possible.Let the foam of the cleaner do the work. Apply the foam to the stain and let it briefly withdraw (do not let it dry completely). Then remove the foam with a slightly damp cloth. Not all tap water in the Netherlands has the same water hardness. Always use distilled water to prevent limescale after cleaning.
----------
Grease stains

Whatever you do, stay calm. Consider what kind of stain it is, and what you can do (basic rules) to limit the damage in the first instance. Grease stains in full-aniline, saddle and vintage leather will pull away over time. Follow basic rules 3 & 4 and then take a look at the stain. If you see colorization in the stain (for example: mustard = grease stain + colour transfer) then you want to remove the colour transfer as quickly as possible. You do not need to do anything about a grease stain in at first glance. The aforementioned leather types have the quality to incorporate small grease stains in the leather. Grab your camera and take a picture of the stain. Then wait a week, and take another picture in the same way (same spot, same angle, same light) and compare them. Do this every week. You will see that, over time, the grease stain becomes less noticeable and will eventually disappear completely. Did the spot not visibly become less noticeable? Send us a picture by mail and we'll take a closer look. You can find our details on the contactpage.
